Secure data exchange in the cloud

Munich – July 7, 2020: The topic of working from home has taken on new dimensions as a result of the current pandemic. Many employees still work at least partially from home and will continue to do so in the foreseeable future. However, the rapid increase in remote work implies that the number of attack vectors is rising accordingly. After all, cyber-criminals are also taking advantage of the current situation. Companies must therefore provide their employees with user-friendly and secure options for working from home. It is precisely in times like these that the topic of „secure, flexible data exchange“ is gaining in importance.

The operator-safe cloud

idgard®, the business cloud of the TÜV SÜD subsidiary uniscon, offers companies the sealed cloud—a patented concept that provides users with the highest level of information security[1]. The internationally patented sealing technology not only prevents external access. It also ensures that not even the operator can access the users‘ data. In addition to 2048-bit SSL encryption, which is used for data transfer from the end device to the sealed cloud, a series of innovative and interlocking technical measures in the data center ensure that any access to unencrypted server data is impossible[2].

Application data and metadata are always protected by the zero-trust architecture, both during transmission as well as during processing and storage. The hermetic sealing of the infrastructure creates a confidential data center that guarantees a much higher level of application and data security than many conventional systems. Furthermore, idgard® fulfills the requirements of the EU general data protection regulation. This includes principles such as Privacy by Design and Privacy by Default (cf. Art. 5, 25, 32 GDPR). In 2016 the service was certified by TÜViT in the highest protection class for cloud services according to the Trusted Cloud Data Protection Profile (TCDP).

Virtual project and data rooms

In addition to the file transfer functionalities—secure online storage, data synchronization and sending mail attachments—idgard® offers virtual project rooms. Thanks to them, employees of a company can exchange data among themselves and across company borders in an uncomplicated and data protection compliant manner—regardless of where they are located. This not only includes the transfer of documents, but also messages, so that collaboration within the team works smoothly.

The solution also offers the option of creating virtual data rooms. Activities carried out in them—such as document retrieval or participation in voting—are documented completely and in an audit-proof manner. This is particularly important in connection with compliance. idgard® virtual data rooms are ideally suited for due diligence examinations, documentation of procedures or communication with the board of directors. Due to their simple and user-friendly design, even employees without previous experience can easily find their way around and extensive training is not necessary.

Full data sovereignty for the user

„We are increasingly realizing how important it is for German companies to have full data sovereignty as users at all times“, says Ulrich Ganz, Director Software Engineering at uniscon. „This is the only way to ensure that sensitive business data can never be accessed.“ He emphasizes that not only the technology plays a decisive role here, but also the location of both the provider and the data center: „Since German providers are not subject to the US CLOUD Act, the possible release of even encrypted information to US authorities is already legally excluded[3].” With idgard® it is also prevented by technical means—a clear advantage.
